This fern is native to all of the USA (except Hawaii), Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.

This plant is hard to find in nurseries. It is listed as exploitably vulnerable in the state of New York.
