Where's the interesting button for my experience? Ordered both Z. mauritiana and Z. nummularia from the banana tree. Labels blew off pots in tropical storms. 1 now in ground, the rest in pots. I.D.'d as Z. mauritiana from leaf and thorns.
Twin vicious thorns, 1 out, the other hooked down. Plant outside your daughter's bedroom windows.
No flowers yet. Potted plants seem to regenerate from soil line easily if the tops die from drying out. I'd swear if your potted plants blow out in hurricanes, they'd still be there afterwards but maybe soil-less. Those thorns will hang on to anything. Best to clip off any thorns, especially if you have kids around. Can't wait for fruit.
I'll rate neutral after digging out too many thorns from my skin, I've learned to clip them on the plant.

I was given a Chinese (apple) date by a friend. I placed the seed or pit on a north window in the fall. In the spring, I planted the pit in a pot, just under the soil. It grew about 18 inches tall in the pot. That fall I planted in the ground. That has been four years ago. My tree is now 6 foot tall, and two foot wide. I haven't pruned it, and was looking for information about pruning. The first few years, the fruit was small, but last year, it was about an inch long, just like the one I was given.
I think the fruit taste like an apple that has been dipped in honey. I don't care for them after they become wrinkled, they taste more like a date, but some people do.
