This is a small tree from the cloudy and rocky mountain tops of Rio de Janeiro, living an altitudes above 1800 meters. It rarely reaches over than 2 meters high, but there are collected specimens that grew much more than that.

This plant has small, leathery, deep green, smooth leaves. The flowers are red, small, single, pendant, with open sepals and conical petals. The fruits are woody, red, with seeds covered by an orange coat.

It likes shallow, sandy soils on granitic rocks, high humidity and frequent watering. Tolerates full sun and moderate temperatures. Tolerates well light forsts.
