I grow pachycormus discolor in my yard in Phoenix. It is hardy here. They reverse seasons; leaves in the winter and deciduous in the summer. Much like the boojum tree, its baja neighbor.

It grows quite slow at least in my experience. There is at least one big one at the Phoenix Botanical Garden. It does have the peeling bark, as does mine. It peels off in white sheets thereby exposing green colored trunk (for aiding photosynthesis I suspect).

Attractive and interesting plant.

Nice caudiciform tree with itty bitty leaves and big fat, rounded very short trunk. Leaves evergreen except in marginal climates (I think). Makes a great natural bonsai and does well in pots. Very drought tolerant. Looks a lot like Buseras but doesn't tend to have papery bark on trunks and leaves are not scented like are most Buseras.
