This is the only vining Chamaedorea species. It grows a rattan like stem that winds around in the canopy, only it has no spines like real rattans. The head of the palm tends to drop down towards the ground. It is a dioecious Chamaedorea (most are) but it is easily crossed with other species (one of the best crosses is this with Chamaedorea glaucifolia) making a palm that tend to look like a very tall, robust version of the same plant. Not a real great landscape or ornamental palm except when young- then it has huge, unsplit leaves that make it look more like some sort of philodendron.

Some forms of this palm have thinner but branching stems- an oddity in the palm world.
