A U.S. FEDERALLY LISTED NOXIOUS WEED.
This species is not allowed for import to the US, nor is it allowed in any interstate or intrastate transportation without a specific permit by USDA APHIS PPQ (Plant Protection and Quarantine).

Found in lakes, ponds, ditches, canals, marshes, slow-moving streams. Will form dense mats that choke out other species, degrades water quality by reducing oxygen levels and interferes with boating, fishing and other recreational activities.

Multiplies vegetatively and by spores. Under the right conditions this species can double its biomass in 5 to 10 days.

Native range is Africa and Madagascar, India, Southeast Asia, China and Japan, Malaya and the Philippines, the New Guinea mainland and Australia.

Azolla lives in symbiosis with blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), taking advantage of their ability to fix nitrogen. It is sometimes introduced and used by farmers as a natural fertilizer for this reason.
