Calochortus albus var. rubellus differs from the type in that it's flowers are a beautiful wine-red. It is found in protected habitats near York Mountain in Central California.

The status of C. albus var. rubellus is uncertain: the Jepson Manual lists it at the varietal rank, but Callahan in his 2001 monograph on the genus calls it a forma.
