Very nice colured crownshaft , more spinny compared to the A .Crinita and brown to redish crownshaft and even branches. Grow better in humid and wet area, even mature it keeps the spines and redish branches as in the pics. whereas the crinita look alike, less spinny of course and simply green crownshaft.

Was considered the same species as A rubra var crinita for years... but this year (2006) a new study has given A crinita its own species status. A rubra has more red on it, and has a rust colored crownshaft. The spines are virtually nonexistent once the crownshaft is formed, but as a seedling this is an intensely spiny palm. Slow growing, it can in many scores, reach 60 ft in the tropics... no idea how tall in will get here in southern California but I doubt even a 1/4 that tall. Seems more tender as a seedling than the A crinita variety and is much slower growing.

Encinitas, California
Thousand Oaks, California
Westminster, California
