Red skin changes to red/yellow when nearly ripe. Melrose has crisp white flesh and a tart sweetness. Developed in 1931, Melrose is a heavy cropping apple that ripens in late October. Flavor improves with storage and apple keeps well for up to 5 months. Available on EMLA 27 rootstock as a mini-dwarf and grows to 6 feet; may be susceptible to fire blight and have slightly smaller fruit size. On M26 rootstock the tree attains height of 8-14 feet and is rather shallow rooted, may require more attention to watering in windy or drought conditions, also more susceptible to fire blight. Also available as semi-dwarf on M7 rootstock (11-16 feet tall) and as a standard tree.

In my zone 5 garden Melrose on EMLA 27 began fruiting at 3 years of age and has cropped heavily with large fruits every year. Now 10 years old, the tree appears mature with slightly weeping branches and is about 6 feet tall. No problem with fire blight. Very crisp, juicy and flavorful but must be allowed to fully ripen for best flavor. I pick at least 25 apples from this tree every year if the squirrels don't eat them first.
