Calochortus subalpinus is a high-altitude/alpine plant found from Mount Adams in Washington down to Douglas County in Oregon at elevations between 1000 and 2500 meters. It one of the few North American members of the genus not found in California. It grows in a wide variety of soils and can handle very severe cold. The plants are among the smallest of Calochortus - never more than 20 cm tall, and usually much smaller.

C. subalpinus belongs to Section I, Calochortus, Subsection 2. Eleganti (Flowers broadly campanulate, held upright; petals densely bearded; capsules elliptic-oblong, three-winged, pendant; bulbs with membranous tunics.) (Callahan, "The Genus Calochortus" in "Bulbs of North America", Timber Press, 2001)

The flowers are always white, with varying amounts of yellow hair on the petals. Callahan states that the sepals are usually marked with a purple glandular spot, but in pictures I've found on the Net these spots are rarely apparent.

I will add a rating and more culture info as I grow it.
