Well i certainly would not eat the seed if i wanted to stay alive. However, the arili which is the cream colored meat is quite edible and delicous when properly prepared.

Some people confuse it with the Surinam cherry....which could be very dangerous.

Fascinating tree with indedible fruit, but edible seed coating (the arils are edible... but ONLY at a certain point in ripening). Grown for it's edible seed coating, which tastes like scrambled eggs. Fruit of this tree is posionous. So is the seed. And even the seed coating if not eaten at the right time. Used to be canned and imported, but no longer due to safety concerns (duh!). Why would anyone want to eat this anyway?? But is a common Jamaican dish.
