The flowers are light pink-magenta with white or very pale throats & the fruit has a strawberry flavor on all the subspecies.
The 'cinarescens' subspecies has 1.6 to 4.7 inch thick stems with 6-12 ribs and occurs in nature above 6600 feet above sea level.
The 'septentrionalis' subspecies has 2.4 inch thick stems with 6-8 ribs and occurs in nature above 3900 feet above sea level.
The 'tulensis' subspecies has 1.6 to 2.4 inch thick stems with 4-7 ribs and occurs in nature below 3900 feet above sea level.
