This is the plant very common in my country,as well in the whole Balkans. You can see it growing in smaller or larger groups on the roofs of some old houses(especialy in the rural areas). That's because there's an old belief that this plant protects the house from evil forces,so,people call it "house protector".Anyway it's been used for centuries as a medicine for earache-simply squeeze a few leaves and pour the juice into the ear. They say it helps.I got few varieties in my alpinetum. Some of the offshots dies at the very end of winter if it's moist and freezing but soon much more new offshots replace them. Also there's a tree species of this Genus native to Serbian mountines:S.kosanini,S.schlechani and S.heuffelii.

Bought this cultivar in 2002. It now fills its space in the rock garden and is going to bloom this year, so I'll add that picture when it's ready. The gray-green color is true throughout the season, and the rosettes are mostly large: 2-3"
