Of the two subspecies, 'tilcarense' has shorter floral tubes than 'saglionis' and only occurs naturally in the Tilcara, Argentina area.
More synonyms are Gymnocalycium saglionis var. roseispinum, Gymnocalycium saglionis var. rubrispinum & Gymnocalycium saglionis var. tucumanense.
