Some consider this the true form of the pygmy date palm- it's a true suckering species from Laos and nearby countries. The more commonly sold solitary form, which is usually sold in clusters of solitary individuals is supposedly a cultivar selected for the nursery trade. THis form profusely suckers and suckers often have to be cut away to keep it form just growing into a messy shrub of leaflets. This form is much rarer in cultivation, but just about the same ease of growht.
