This plant seems to love something about Florida, because it is a moderate grower here. It is easily discerned by the bronzish undersize to the pinnae. One specimen in Sarasota County has leaves approaching 10 feet tall with an even larger spear at about 7 years of age. There are reports of this plant taking temps into the upper teens with minor foliage damage - probably the most cold hardy Arenga.

Similar in appearance to Arenga engleri except maybe a bit larger and beefier, this species is supposedly the most cold hardy of all the Arenga, coming from high altitude in the Himalayan mountains. It hasn't been really tested in cultivation yet as it's relatively newly discovered, and so slow growing, no one has adults yet. I got a seedling 5 years ago, and it has hardly grown that I can tell... opens about a new leaf every 1.5 years.

Thousand Oaks, California
Venice, Florida
