A great unusual plant from Western Cape of South Africa ... thus, it prefers a similar climate with winter water and summer dry, USDA Zones 8, 9 & 10. Protect from heavy frost. Foliage is Winter-growing, Summer-deciduous. Large scape (2-3') arises from bare bulb in late Summer/early Fall. The bulb should be planted so that the top half is exposed. A good loam or sandy soil is best. A slow grower - 10-14 years from seed! For a similar but 'faster' growing plant, try B.littoralis ... only 5-6 years to bloom from seed!
