Have used this as a potted plant with ivy at the base of it. It just gets turned over and covered for winter and has overwintered 7 years! Blooms continuously if you deadhead it.

This clematis doesn't grab onto the trellis, and needs to be tied to it. It's a beautiful, aggressive plant that blooms from June to Frost here in zone 4a.
