This fern is native to the United States (Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia).

It is considered an endanger species in the states of Illinois and Iowa, and is listed as exploitably vulnerable in the state of New York.
