This is my favorite red bark maple! 'Fjellheim' will never grow too big like its parent 'Sango kaku' can. I am impressed that the red twig and branch color is retained all year. Beautiful Fall colors make this a true four season tree. Our 'Fjellheim' is planted in full sun and has flourished.

This selection arose as a witches'-broom on the popular coral-bark maple , 'Sango kaku'. Like the parent, this selection has similar bright coral-pink bark. The leaves are Palmatum Group and plain green, becoming yellow in fall. Unlike 'Sango kaku' which forms a small tree, 'Fjellheim' will stay shorter and bushier, making it suitable for smaller gardens or containers.
