Saw this growing at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, Mass., and was intrigued. Turns out it will grow in cultivation, not just in shale barrens. The New England Wildflower Society (who manage GITW) sells seeds, and I've found it for sale other places online as well.

I'll try to snap a photo next time I'm there -- very interesting plant with great clematis seedheads.

This rare American native is restricted to the Viriginia West Virginia border area at altitudes of 300-800m, where it is usually found on shale barrens.
