Subspecies 'vallegrandensis' only grows to height of about 3.5 inches, is globose and only has one central spine. Native only to Vallegrande province.
Subspecies 'huotii' reaches about 14 inches high, is cylindrical and has 4 central spines. Native to Bolivia.
Flowers on both are white, 7-8 inches long.
