This is another of the Dasanthera section penstemon, agroup of evergreen subshrubs that do well in the wetter, more acidic gardens of E. North America. It is a rather tender species, only hardy to zone 6. It is the largest in this section with plants reaching 12". The leaves are quite succulent in texture and a gray-green coloour. The rose-mauve flowers show well against the foliage.
