"This one in the Los Angeles arboretum is in a greenhouse so no snail damage. But it's a good shot of the underside of the leaves in a happy, sporophyl producing plant. That brown is thousands of itty bitty sporophyls (and the material holding them). If you have perfect conditions (constant heat and humidity) you can grow thousands of ferns from those sporophyls.
