The 7 principles include: Planning and design; Soil analysis; Practical turf areas; Appropriate plant selection; Efficient irrigation; Use of mulches; and Appropriate maintenance. The term is trademarked by the Denver Water Department to insure non-commercial use of Xeriscape.
