A bluish-white metallic element occuring in combination, used as a protective covering or coating, as a component in alloys, as a reducing agent, and as an electrode in a voltaic battery.

Soils that are highly alkaline or arid (low rainfall areas) may not allow plants to fix (chemically bind) iron, manganese and zinc. Manganese and zinc allow the plant to absorbe nutrients (slow and small growth); iron is necessary for the formation of chlorophyll
