In the world of palms, the heal is a unique structural part of the root of some species of palms that protrudes from the ground a \'way\'s from the main stem (usually inches away). It is part of a \'saxaphone\' growth of the root of some palms that helps to anchor the palm into the soil. The root starts to grow downward in a seedling, and then, at some point, turns and grows upward until breaching the surface (forming the \'heel\'). From there it grows back down again. All Sabal palms have this feature, though as the palm mautures, finding the heel can be difficult as it usually gets covered with fallen debris and becomes non-essential at that point. Many other species of palms have heals. Most heal forming palms tend to be slow growing, at least as seedlings, as so much time and energy is spent in its formation.
