Definition as written by talinum:

A propagation practice. Roots are formed on stems which come in contact with the soil.

Definition as written by shakemh:

A means of plant procreation by which the parent plant can be cloned (See def, CLONING), that can occur naturally or through gardener assisted propagation. The former, when the lower branches or stems, or runners, of some deciduous plants come in contact with or are engulfed in bare soil – once the roots become established the branch or runner can then be detached between that point and the parent, dug up, and transplanted. The latter type of layering occurs through AIR LAYERING (see under that definition).
