any of a family (Cicadidae) of homopterous insects which have a stout body, wide blunt head, and large transparent wings and the males of which produce a loud buzzing noise usually by stridulation.
From Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
These are cicadas. There are several varieties of these insects. The larvae live in the ground for a certain number of years...depends on the species as to how long, finally emerge ,climb up a tree, and split their skin. The adult cicada emerges and vibrates it's wings, causing an erie singing sound. This is to find a mate.
When thousands of cicadas do this at the same time, you can hear it in your homes and going down the road in your car.
