Definition as written by Terry:

A device that attaches to a lawn mower to collect the grass clippings so they can be removed to the compost pile or disposed of.

Unnecessary if grass is mowed regularly and often (smaller pieces can break down without causing a thatch problem) and/or if a mulching blade is used.

However, an attachment can be helpful when mowing in areas where the grass clippings would otherwise land in a garden bed or pool (or anywhere they would cause a nuisance.)
