Something that remains after a part is taken, separated.

Definition as written by Terry:

The amount of inorganic fertilizer or pesticide or herbicide that remains in plants, soils or groundwater after it has been applied.

It's especially important to follow label directions carefully when applying chemicals to nearly-ripe fruit or vegetables and make sure enough time will elapse before harvesting so that any residual effects can safely wear off.
