It's an element. It is denoted by "C" in a chemical formula. It is what both diamonds and coal are made of.

This is one of the 4 basic elements for every living being. Itīs the basic element that constitutes sugar molecules, which are broken by the cells to produce energy. Also, as a result, carbonic dioxyde (CO2) is produced.

Plants do it too, but in adition, during the photosynthesis process, they gather CO2 from the air and use it to build organic matter (including sugar).
