Definition as written by mwhit:

Named after the American Indian tent style home. This garden structure is made by inserting 6-8 long poles(material choices range from bamboo, wood or aluminum) into the garden soil in a circle 6-10 feet wide.

Lean the poles in and secure the tops together with wire or rope. This forms the teepee frame. Plant vigorous vines(usually beans) around the circle and train up the poles. (It helps to lace twine around the teepee to give vine tendrils something to cling to.) The resulting teepee provides a great crop of beans and a fun place for kids to play.
