Definition as written by paulgrow:

An irrigation system where pipes are buried underground. "Heads" are spaced at desired intervals to deliever the water. Pop-up heads are very popular they pop-up when the water is on and recess into the ground when the water flow is off.

Timers are used to turn the water on and off when desired. Moisture detectors are also available so that the system won't turn on when it's raining.
