Definition as written by Terry:

A delta can form anywhere a stream or river flows into shallow open water.

According to some sources, the term delta was first used by Herodotus, because the Greek letter "d" (delta) is similar to the deltoid shape of the mouth of the Nile River.

The soil deposited by the river is often rich in nutrients, and delta land is often used for crop production - with the understanding that it is also often flood-prone.
