A yellow pigment found in many yellow and orange fruits, vegetables and flowers including carrots, squash, cantaloupes, buttercups, and daffodils.

It is associated with fall leaf colors, although present in lesser quantities than xanthophyll

Any of the three isomeric hydrocarbons based on C40H56 resulting in orange to red coloration in plants. See also Xanthophyll and Anthocyanin.
