Categorized under "General" Definition as written by Sugar_fl: A mixture of decaying organic matter - as from leaves and manure - used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients Definition as written by Terry: Compost can be made using an aerobic process where air (and heat) help break down the material into humus; or an anaerobic process which relies on different critters (and more time) to finish. Weed seeds and diseased plant materials are not good candidates for either process, but they stand a better chance of being rendered harmless if the compost pile gets hot enough. See hot composting.
