Definition as written by Terry:

Cyprinus carpio

A species of freshwater fish often found in ornamental ponds and water gardens

Closely related to common carp, Koi are colorful and able to interact with humans (especially at feeding time), koi can easily endear themselves to pond owners. However, they can be somewhat destructive in ponds, stirring up muck on the bottom and eating pond plants.

Common alternatives to koi include shubunkin, fantail, comet and other ornamental goldfish
