Definition as written by Terry:

In the animal world, the term refers to animals that reproduce by bearing live offspring.

In the plant world, it refers to plants that reproduce by developing a new plant while still attached to the parent plant.

For example, some water lily varieties produce a new plantlet on a mature leaf, where it attaches to the stem.

Definition as written by Magpye:

[Giving birth to live young] .. as distinct from oviparous. (ie. laying eggs.)
