Definition as written by Monocromatico:
The inner whorl of foliar structures in a flower constituted by the petals. Usually membranaceous and colorful, its primary objective is to atract pollinators.
Flowers may feature some modifications of it, like apendices (e.g. Passion Flower), lips (Orchids), joined petals (Salvia, Gloxinia, Campanula, Ixora, Pentas), or just the total lack of it (Euphorbia, Peperomia). In some species, the corolla is very reduced, but the calyx assumes the responsability to make the flowers atractive (Aristolochia).
