Definition as written by Terry:

When it comes to gardening, woody ornamentals, especially evergreen trees and shrubs form what is known as the "backbone", referring to their constant presence even during the cold months when herbaceous perennials and annuals are not visible. Clipped low hedges remind us where the garden bed is, even when covered with snow.

Other backbone elements can include hardscape features such as a statue or topiary and design elements such as path or fence or arbor
