The primary leaves of an embryo that are present in the seed. These are the very first leaves that emerge and are not true leaves

The cotyledon are the embryonic leaves and wither when the first true leaves develop. This is very noticable on a bean seed where sometimes you can see the whole bean split and the cotyledon appear.
