Definition as written by talinum:

The transfer of pollen from one plant variety to another.

Definition as written by melody:

When two different varieties of plants exchange pollen, the resulting offspring are the products of a cross pollination.

Yellow Squash and some types of pumpkins are compatable varieties and will cross pollinate. You will not notice any difference in the harvest the first season, but if you plant the seeds saved from the crossed varieties, the resulting F1 hybrid will have characteristics of both parents.

Definition as written by Magpye:

The transfer of pollen from the flower of one plant to the flower on a different plant. Many species require this to set seed. As opposed to self-pollination.
