An organism that can live without oxygen, such as the bacteria in a septic tank.

Making anaerobic compost is a slower, slimier, and smellier process than aerobic compost. However, the result is a more humus-rich product and - according to some sources - it may also make a larger volume of compost from the same raw materials than using an aerobic composting process.
