A division of the Plant Kingdom constituted by vascular plants without seeds. The major groups within Pteridophyta include Whisk Fern (Psilotopsida), Lycopodium (Lycopodopsida), Horsetails (Sphenopsida), Ferns, Maindenhair and Tree Ferns (Pteridopsida). These plants were particularly abundant during the Carboniferous period, over 300,000,000 years ago.
