Definition as written by Monocromatico:

A unity of the Metric System. A meter is divided into 100 centimeters, each centimeter divided into 10 milimeters. 1000 meters form a kilometer.

This is the scale used by most countries, instead of the Royal System, popular in some places in Europe and North America. In Botany, the most common is the usage of metric measures for all plant structures in scientific works.

Roughly, 3 centimeters correspond to 1 inch. An average sized man of 6 feet tall, is in the metric system 1 meter and 80 centimeters (1,80) tall.

Edit: Also, meter is a greek word for "measurement", so itīs a complement for words like "barometer" (pressure measurer), "termometer" (temperature measurer), "dynamometer" (force measurer), etc.
