To remove spent blooms from a plant in order to prolong its blooming period. By removing the spent blooms many plants will produce more flowers in its effort to reproduce through seed production. By removing the flowers before seed is produced the plant is forced to try again.
(When you hear this term do not be confused with fans of the Grateful Dead, called "Dead Heads"; or truck drivers who "Dead Head" - make a return trip with no cargo.)
Pinch here, snip there, removing spent flowers that have already bloomed. This is done for the benefit of the plant to prevent disease, prevent seed development and will encourage more vigorous blooming and a bushier plant.
