Historically the term refers to plants that have animal-like characteristics (for example, the sensitive plant that closes up when touched.)

Modern usage of the term typically refers to invertebrates with plant-like characteristics (sea anemones, sponges, coral, etc.)

Zoophytology is the study of plant-like animals.
