Definition as written by Terry:

Tomato plants are often differentiated between indeterminate and determinate varieties as well as other characteristics.

Gardeners typically choose some determinate varieties to provide a large quantity of ripe tomatoes for canning or making salsa; they may also choose some indeterminate varieties to ensure a steady supply of fresh tomatoes throughout the growing season.
