(genetics) the act of mixing different species or varieties of animals or plants and thus to produce hybrids.

In gardening terms, this usually means to pollinate one species or variety with pollen from another species or variety, thereby creating an entirely new variety (called a hybrid). The requiement (test) to determine if a new hybrid has indeed been created is that the offspring of of the two parents must differ in atleast one gene. Also see: hybrid.
